Wellness RX: Report On Colloidal Silver

Dating back to ancient times, silver has been used throughout the world to stop the spread of diseases. It’s use as a natural antibiotic continued all the way until the 1940s, when modern antibiotics arrived. In traditional medicine today, the medical incorporation of silver includes use in wound dressing and as an antibiotic coating on medical devices.

Colloidal silver products (silver particles suspended in liquid) were OTC regulated in the United States until 1999 when the FDA ruled that they were “not safe or effective.'' Hence, products could not be marketed for medical purposes or promoted for unproven uses without appropriate FDA approval as a new drug.

With the FDA ruling, Colloidal silver products were forced to be sold as “homeopathic remedies, immune system supporters and dietary supplements (silver is a mineral, but not an essential mineral supplement).“ Despite the FDA claims about safety and effectiveness, consumers continue to purchase Colloidal silver products for many conditions, especially for internal and external infections.

As a Wellness Center with a licensed pharmacy, we have been carefully evaluating the use of colloidal silver products by patients over the past five years. 

Here’s what we have found:

1.  There are  basically three types of products that are marketed as “colloidal silver“:

Ionic silver solutions; silver protein and true colloidal silver. According to the encyclopedia of chemical technology, a silver colloidal ranges between 1-100 nano-meters in size. Any silver particles larger than 100 nano-meters act as a toxic metal. Hence, all colloidal silvers on the market ranging between 1-100 nano-meters are technically a true colloidal silver.

We will only carry colloidal silver products from the top companies in the field. The quality of the products matter a great deal. A top product will only contain pharmaceutical grade colloidal silver with nano sized particles, contain no additives and only use pharmaceutical grade water. A top product will appear amber in color will be free of any visible particles and be tested by qualified independent laboratories.

2. Colloidal silver products come in suspensions and tinctures for internal use and sprays, gels or ointments for external or topical use. Tinctures may also contain herbal additives such as oregano, echinacea or olive leaf and topical products may contain herbs, an antiseptic like tea tree oil or for topical healing an agent like aloe vera gel.

3. Colloidal silver products are measured in parts per million (PPM) strengths. The higher the PPM, the darker the amber color silver suspension will appear. Higher PPM products offer the convenience of less dosages per day. 

4. Without question, the most amazing thing that we have observed about colloidal silver is it’s powerful ability to kill all germs (bacteria; viruses & fungal) in a relatively short period of time. According to a report written by Richard Davies and Samuel Etis of The Silver Institute,  silver ions appear to hold onto oxygen molecules and attach directly to cell membranes. This dual action interferes with the oxidation process of germs (cellular respiration) which, in turn, kills the germs and stops their reproduction.

This powerful ability to kill all germs holds great promise in the future as modern medicine struggles to deal with antibiotic resistant super-bugs.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 2 million people in the US suffer illness every year as a result of antibiotic resistant infections and 23,000 die from these infections.

As a potent antibacterial agent, patients are recommended to take a high dose probiotic (live bacteria; on an empty stomach) ) while taking an internal silver product. They should, however, avoid taking the probiotic within three hours of taking the silver product.

In particular, we have witnessed patients with acute or chronic sinusitis being greatly helped using colloidal silver as a nasal spray (50 ppm; four sprays into both nostrils up to five times a day). The spray can be used directly into the throat or used in warm water as a throat gargle. You can also add a few drops of silver in a “neti pot“ and use as a nasal wash or douche (adding salt to the neti pot may reduce the power of the silver).

Since most sinus infections are caused by a virus and or fungal (mold), colloidal silver offers great hope for healing and will also be effective in the 20%+ cases of sinus infections caused by bacteria.

Recent research indicates that hidden infections by pathogens could be the cause of respiratory inflammation associated with common allergies and asthma. Airborne allergy sufferers may experience excellent relief from colloidal silver. Some patients add 5 to 10 drops of liquid silver (250 ppm) directly into their nebulizer and use three times a day for 10 to 15 minutes. Others add a few drops of liquid silver along with essential oils to 3 inches of boiling water, place a towel over their heads and breathe the therapeutic vapor is deep into their lungs.

Finally, colloidal silver as a natural germ killer, holds the potential to help fight against bronchitis and pneumonia when ingested internally especially if the germ is viral or antibiotics have not been effective. A dose of 1 teaspoonful of colloidal silver (250 or 500) ppm taken twice a day for 5 to 7 days may be all that is needed.

5. We have found that colloidal silver can be highly effective for the treatment of burns, alone or added to raw honey, and holds potential in the treatment of thrush, periodontist and other topical conditions, such as ringworm, psoriasis or eczema. According to Robert O. Becker, MD, in addition to its ability to kill germs, colloidal silver stimulates healing in the skin and other soft tissues.

6. Most interesting and promising is the use of colloidal silver as an antiviral for HIV/AIDS, pneumonia, herpes, shingles, warts, chronic Lyme disease and potentially hepatitis C. According to Dr. Martin Hum, from the Institute for optimum nutrition, “colloidal silver is a natural remedy that stops viruses fast by literally suffocating the virus.“ Since all colds and all types of flu or viral in nature, colloidal silver may be beneficial, in concert with elderberry tonic, zinc supplements and large doses of vitamin C, in preventing a cold or flu or reducing the recovery time of the illness.

7. We have also observed patients using colloidal silver to successfully treat pink eye or a stye caused by highly infectious virus or bacteria (1 to 2 drops mixed into a pH balance eye wash and administered by eye cup up to six times a day or five drops mixed into a bottle of OTC artificial tears), ear infections caused by bacteria or fungal (1 to 2 drops added to a glycerin or olive oil base; warm solution and place three drops into affected ear three times a day and plug ear with cotton), as an anti-inflammatory agent (alone or added to other medications) to reduce swelling, speed healing and boost cell recovery and for treatment of vaginal and anal infections, (5 to 10 drops applied directly to affected area.)

8. Finally, it is important to note that colloidal silver can have side effects with some medications and should not be used during pregnancy, while breast-feeding or by infants. Most important, colloidal silver should not be used for more than 14 days in a row since it is slow to leave the body and both internal and external use will deposit silver into organs such as skin, liver, spleen, kidney, muscle and brain. Prolonged use could lead to an irreversible bluish/blue looking skin that first appears in the gums. Prolonged use could also stimulate melanin production in skin and areas exposed to the sun could become increasingly discolored.

For patients using colloidal silver to treat chronic conditions such as Lyme disease, it is recommended that they stop usage after 14 days, wait for 30 days and then repeat usage for another 14 days. Any cycle of repeated use should be monitored by a health professional.

While colloidal silver products can be used safely with pets, it is recommended that pet owners receive professional input on dosage and length of administration.
